Writeup of the May Writers Afternoon

Rebecca Otowa reports on a writing workshop held in Kyoto.

On May 23 the third Writers Afternoon was held at David Duff’s home in Shimogamo, Kyoto. The photos show what a lively afternoon it was, with 6 participants as well as the organizer and host.

The participants were, in no particular order: Jann Williams (Tasmania-Kyoto), Lisa Twaronite (Tokyo-Kyoto), Swee Yong (Singapore-Nara), Eliza Enno (Romania-Japan), Sanjay Mathur (India-US-Japan) and Paul Bregazzi (Ireland-Japan). As you can see we had a nice mix of people, with two members and four “potential” members (hope they don’t mind me calling them that!).

The event included self-introductions, writing exercises (in a handout provided by me), and book introductions by David from his extensive library, including one written by him called “Ero Samurai” — draw your own conclusions! The most popular exercise was one where prompts about Kyoto were offered and people had to write one sentence each about 3 of them. Some participants kindly shared their writing at the end; it was optional as always.

Snacks and drinks were provided, thanks to those who brought something!

A good time was had by all. Please consider coming to the next one which will probably be on July 25 Saturday. Watch this space (website) or FB pages for updates!

Thanks to all who attended, and those who unfortunately couldn’t attend but maybe we shall see them some other time. Please register with me at rebecca.on.her.way@gmail.com
