Haiku from a Tiny Fishing Village

The crows inspired me to try my hand at haiku. My editor encouraged me to continue. Here’s hoping for further inspiration from this tiny fishing village I’ve known for fifty-five years, with its snail’s pace, vast beach, and birds aplenty. — Stephen Benfey

JANUARY

Windy, cold bare beach
No tourist trash — no black kites
Dog pees on seaweed

FEBRUARY

Cormorants, patient
Side by side on white-splashed rocks
Fish are late today

MARCH

Two crows on a wire
Fucking in the dawn drizzle
Spring is on the wing
