David Joiner was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Earlham College and majored in Japanese Studies. During his junior year he made his first trip to Asia – a five-month study abroad program in Sapporo, Japan. Nine years and several trips to Asia later he earned his MFA from the University of Arizona where he studied fiction, nonfiction, and playwriting. He has been shuttling between the US, Vietnam, and Japan for all of his adult life.
David currently lives in Kanazawa, Japan, where he is working on a second novel set on the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia. He is also exploring opportunities to set a third novel in Japan.
On October 11th at The Gael Irish Pub, David will present on his experiences doing a book tour that took him to Canada, the US, and Vietnam earlier this year. The video below is of an interview he did in Hanoi for both a Vietnamese and international broadcast. An essay he wrote about how Vietnam influenced his decision to pursuing writing was recently published in diaCritics.
